Elements and Performance Criteria

  1. Identify basic motive power unit types
  2. Different motive power unit types and/or gauges currently in operation are identified
  3. Basic layout of different types of motive power unit is identified
  4. Hazards are identified, risks are assessed and risk control measures are implemented
  5. Identify air/vacuum systems and operation
  6. Basic air/vacuum components relevant to motive power unit type are located and identified
  7. Uses and operation of air/vacuum system are identified
  8. Identify electrical systems and operation
  9. Basic electrical components relevant to motive power unit type are located and identified
  10. Uses and operation of electrical system are identified
  11. Identify mechanical systems and operation
  12. Basic mechanical components relevant to motive power unit type are located and identified
  13. Uses and operation of mechanical system are identified
  14. Identify control systems and operation
  15. Basic control system components relevant to motive power unit type are located and identified
  16. Uses and operation of control systems are identified

Performance Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria on at least one occasion and include:

identifying job hazards and taking required action to minimise, control or eliminate identified hazards

identifying motive power unit types including:

air/vacuum systems

auxiliary equipment

control systems

cooling and lubricating systems

electrical systems

mechanical systems

safety system equipment and their operations.


Knowledge Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include knowledge of:

fundamentals of track layout

electrical components, as required

mechanical equipment, as required

relevant railway terminology

relevant safety, work health and safety (WHS)/occupational health and safety (OHS), and environmental procedures and regulations

relevant workplace and operational procedures

types of motive power units including:

air/vacuum systems

auxiliary equipment

control systems

cooling and lubricating systems

electrical systems

mechanical systems

safety system equipment and their operations.
